Pearls are the precious gemstone of the sea and have interesting mythological roots. Some ancient societies believed that pearls were formed from Mermaid tears, some believed pearls came from the bowels of the ocean where they were guarded by dragons. Though we now know that pearls form from a single grain of sand within an oyster, the steady thread throughout all myths of the pearl, is that pearls are connected to the moon and it’s pull of the tides. That symbolism persists today, making the pearl the most feminine of all gemstones.
